A perennial Fair favorite, the excitement of harness racing comes to the grandstand for two days of racing action.
A sport with a long tradition — and one that calls for great skill on the part of the drivers — harness racing appeals to both the young and old. In addition to the thrill of the race itself, spectators have the option of parimutuel wagering.
The Canfield Fair races are presented by the Canfield Harness Horsemen’s Association (CHHA), one of the largest horsemen’s groups in the state (over 100 members), and also a group that has been extremely active in the community for over 30 years.
In addition to continually improving the track and barn area at the Fairgrounds, in 2003 the CHHA expanded its scholarship program to present two $500 scholarships to local youths to help pay for higher education. To raise awareness of their scholarship program and their work with the Second Harvest Food Bank, the CHHA also holds a celebrity race at the fair. The event brings in radio and TV celebrities to race in front of the grandstand full of cheering fans.
